ABOUT
Dr. Tamara Dickinson is the Founder and President of Science Matters Consulting, LLC, where she leads efforts to bridge the gap between groundbreaking scientific research and impactful policy and management decisions, with a particular emphasis on space weather and building professional relationships across sectors.
With decades of experience at the intersection of science and government, Dr. Dickinson specializes in helping organizations cultivate influential partnerships and engage key decision makers, driving effective strategies with federal agencies and collaborators. She is known for her leadership in national initiatives focused on space weather preparedness and has played a pivotal role in bringing together diverse teams from academia, the private sector, non-governmental, and international organizations to advance shared goals.
In her role as Principal Assistant Director for Environment and Energy at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), Dr. Dickinson coordinated the Federal Government’s activities to build the nation’s disaster resilience, prepare for the impacts of natural disasters, enable the Earth and space sciences, develop the first National Space Weather Strategy and Action Plan, and to establish the National Science and Technology Council’s Space Weather Operations, Research, and Mitigation (SWORM) interagency committee. She oversaw the development of the first National Space Weather Strategy and Action Plan.
Her career also includes the development of data preservation and laboratory programs at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), as well as key roles at the National Research Council, National Science Foundation, and NASA Headquarters.
She is recognized for her ability to build lasting professional relationships and foster collaborative networks. She has received numerous accolades, including the Department of Interior Superior Service Award and Meritorious Service Award, and is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. In recognition of her contributions, Asteroid 1981 EU22 Tammydickinson was named in her honor.
Dr. Dickinson serves on a variety of boards of trustees and advisory groups, where she contribute expertise in strategy, policy, and organizational leadership. In these roles, she provides strategic guidance, fosters collaborations, and helps organizations advance their missions. Her board work focuses on strengthening governance, shaping long-term priorities, and ensuring that diverse perspectives inform decision-making.
Dr. Dickinson holds a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa, and both an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. She is dedicated to ensuring that science strengthens organizations, supports their missions, and forges valuable connections across the science and policy landscape.
